People who have been affected with moderate acne may be treated with prescription topical or oral medicines. There are various types of prescription topical medicines available to treat moderate acnes. These include antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, tretinoin and azelaic acid. These antibiotics help to stop the growth or slow down the growth of bacteria and help to reduce inflammation. Tretinoin is a type of drug called the retinoid which contains an altered form of Vitamin A. This is an effective topical medicine which helps to stop the development of new comedones. It works by removing existing comedones which allows other topical medicines, such as antibiotics to enter the follicles. Doctors prescribe new type of retinoids such as tazarotene or adapalene that help to decrease comedone formation.
There are chances of getting side effects while using prescription topical medicines. In the beginning the skin would look ugly before it start improving. The side effects include severe stinging pain, burning sensation, redness of the skin, skin peeling, scaling or even discolouration of the skin. With some retinoid medicines these side effect will go off after it is been used for a continuous period of time. If you have prolonged side effects you should immediately report to your doctor. It would take approximately four to eight weeks before the skin improves.
Patients with moderate acnes are prescribed with antibiotics in the oral form. The oral medication will help to control the growth of the bacteria that causes the acne and help to reduce inflammation. Topical medicines and oral medicines may be given combined. Benzoyl peroxide may be combined with clindamycin, erythromycin or sulfur.
The side effects caused by these antibiotics are an increased tendency to sunburn, it might cause stomach upset, cuase dizziness or lightheadedness. It may cause change in skin colour. Terracycline should not be given to pregnant women and children who are under the age of eight as it would discolor the teeth.
During the early stages of treatment blackheads may disappear. You will have redness in the same area have discomfort or there may be peeling of the skin. After three weeks new acnes may appear, but it will soon disappear. After six weeks there would be good progress and a noticeable change. After twelve weeks your acne would come complete control.
