When you have lager deep solid and painful lumps under your skin, then it is considered to be severe type of acne. These breakouts cover large areas of skin and will last longer than the moderate acne. It would last for months or even years. Severe acnes will not respond to across the counter products of skincare which are usually available with the pharmacy or that are found in the supermarkets. To begin with you should try cleansing and protecting your skin. If you are prescribed isotretinoin your skin will become clear after first few weeks. To protect your skin you should keep your showers to flow slowly and always use lukewarm water instead of hot water. To keep the dryness under control you should make use of moisturizer on your face regularly. For sensitive skin it is best to make use of oil free moisturizer.
If the regular method does not help to improve your acne, you dermatologist may prescribe isotretinoin which is a retinoid. This is an oral drug that needs to be taken twice daily for 15 to 20 weeks. It will reduce the size of the oil glands thus producing less oil. This will decrease the growth of the bacteria.
Isotretinoin will effective reduce or prevent scarring This type of severe acne completely disappears after 15 to 20 weeks of treatment with isotretinoin. In some patients it might recur. In such cases the dermatologist would once again ask the patient to go for the same treatment for next 15 to 20 weeks.
There are a lot of disadvantages of using isotretinoin. It would cause birth defects in the developing fetus of the pregnant women affected with acne and undergoing this treatment. It is important that child bearing women do not get pregnant while undergoing this treatment or do not go for this treatment if they are pregnant.
This type of acne causes a lot of discomfort for the patients. They become depressed with the changes in the appearance of their skin. During the treatment it would affect the mental health or intensify the changes n the mental health of the patients. A doctor should be consulted immediately if patients feel unusually sad or have other symptoms like loss of appetite.
Other types of side effects include dryness of the eyes, mouth lips and nose. Skin itching, there could be nose bleeding. There may be muscle pain; sensitivity to the sun and even poor night vision. Side effects are gone after the treatment is stopped.
